Trek Overview

The Langtang Valley Trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Langtang region. From there, the trail follows the Langtang Khola through dense forests of oak, bamboo, and rhododendron, gradually ascending into wide alpine meadows and glacial moraines. You'll pass through Tamang settlements like Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Mundu before reaching Kyanjin Gompa — the cultural and spiritual heart of the valley, home to a centuries-old Buddhist monastery and a small cheese factory. A climb to Kyanjin Ri (4,984m) or Tserko Ri (5,033m) rewards you with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gang Chhenpo, and the Tibetan Plateau. The trek showcases the resilience and beauty of this region, which was devastated by the 2015 earthquake and has since been rebuilt with remarkable spirit.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A carefully designed itinerary with proper acclimatization to maximize your chances of success.

Depart Kathmandu early morning and drive along the Trishuli River through terraced hillsides, local bazaars, and winding mountain roads to Syabrubesi (1,550m). The 7-8 hour drive passes through Dhunche, the Langtang National Park headquarters. Settle into your teahouse and prepare for the trek ahead.

Cross the Bhote Koshi river and begin your ascent through dense subtropical forest. The trail winds through oak and bamboo groves, with the roar of the Langtang Khola accompanying you. Pass through Bamboo (1,960m) and continue uphill to Lama Hotel (2,380m), a cluster of teahouses nestled among towering trees.

Continue ascending through beautiful rhododendron forests that bloom in vivid reds and pinks during spring. As the valley opens up, you'll enter traditional Tamang settlements with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Arrive at Langtang Village (3,430m), which has been rebuilt after the devastating 2015 landslide, and learn about the community's remarkable recovery.

A relatively gentle day through wide yak pastures and glacial moraines. Pass through Mundu village and follow the trail along the valley floor with dramatic views of Langtang Lirung's massive south face. Arrive at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), visit the ancient Buddhist monastery, and explore the local yak cheese factory. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing.

An early start for the climb to Kyanjin Ri (4,984m), a steep but non-technical ascent taking 3-4 hours round trip. The summit offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Dorje Lakpa, Gang Chhenpo, Yala Peak, and distant views towards Tibet. For the more adventurous, Tserko Ri (5,033m) offers an even higher vantage point (6-7 hours round trip). Return to Kyanjin Gompa for a well-earned rest.

Spend the day exploring the area around Kyanjin Gompa. Hike to the Langtang Glacier viewpoint for dramatic close-up views of the icefall and surrounding peaks. Visit local homes, interact with Tamang families, and soak in the serenity of this high-altitude paradise. This extra day ensures good acclimatization before the descent.

Begin the descent retracing your steps through the Langtang Valley. The downhill trek offers fresh perspectives on the landscape. Enjoy the changing vegetation zones as you drop from alpine meadows back into the forest. Overnight at Lama Hotel (2,380m).

Continue the descent through the forests along the Langtang Khola. The trail is mostly downhill and takes around 5-6 hours. Arrive in Syabrubesi and celebrate the completion of your trek with your guide and porter team.

After breakfast, board the vehicle for the return drive to Kathmandu (7-8 hours). Enjoy the changing scenery from the mountains to the Kathmandu Valley. Arrive in the evening and transfer to your hotel. Farewell dinner with the team.

Free morning for last-minute shopping in Thamel or sightseeing. Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight, carrying unforgettable memories of the Langtang Valley.

The Langtang Valley exceeded all my expectations. The Tamang people are incredibly welcoming, and the views from Kyanjin Ri were absolutely spectacular. Our guide Pemba was knowledgeable and made sure we were safe and comfortable throughout. Highly recommend this trek as a less crowded alternative to Everest Base Camp!

What an incredible experience! The spring rhododendron blooms were like walking through a painting. The acclimatization day at Kyanjin Gompa was perfect — climbed Tserko Ri and the panorama was unforgettable. The cheese factory is a fun surprise at that altitude!

Beautiful trek with stunning scenery throughout. The drive to Syabrubesi is long and bumpy, but worth it once you start walking. The food in teahouses was surprisingly good — loved the dal bhat! Only minor downside was limited hot water at higher camps. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

This was my first high-altitude trek and the Langtang Valley was the perfect choice. Not too crowded, manageable difficulty, and the scenery rivals anything in the Himalayas. The story of Langtang Village's rebuilding was deeply moving. Our porters and guide were fantastic — a truly memorable trip.
