Trek Overview
Tucked beneath the towering south face of Machhapuchhre, the Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal's most rewarding short adventures. The trail climbs a forested ridge through moss-draped rhododendron and oak woodland before breaking above the tree line onto a high, grassy "balcony" with uninterrupted views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Mardi Himal. Because it opened as a tea house route relatively recently, it remains far quieter than the busier Annapurna trails — perfect for trekkers who want big mountain scenery, comfortable lodges and an authentic feel within a short, accessible itinerary from Pokhara.
Highlights
- Spectacular sunrise over Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South
- Walk the scenic high-ridge 'balcony' trail above the clouds
- Enchanting rhododendron and oak forests alive with birdsong
- Far fewer crowds than the classic Annapurna routes
- Cozy ridgeline tea houses with panoramic Himalayan views
- Easy access from Pokhara — an ideal short Himalayan escape

Frequently Asked Questions
It is a moderate trek. There are some steep forested climbs and one long summit-and-descent day, but no technical sections and no high pass to cross.
No prior high-altitude experience is required, though reasonable fitness and a few weeks of cardio preparation make the trek far more enjoyable.
Spring (March–May) for rhododendron blooms, and autumn (September–November) for the clearest mountain views.
Mardi Himal Base Camp sits at about 4,500m. It is high enough for grand views but low enough to limit altitude risk on a well-paced itinerary.

The balcony trail is pure magic — waking at High Camp to Machhapuchhre glowing pink is something I'll never forget. Perfectly organised and unrushed.

Beautiful forests and views above the clouds. The summit day is long but worth every step. A wonderful first Himalayan trek.
